There is a popular belief that when women spend a lot of time together, their periods sync up and they menstruate on the same day every month. It is also believed to be a true sign of friendship if your period syncs up.

But is it a real phenomenon or just a theory To find out, we spoke with Dr. Jagriti Varshney, M.S. Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

According to her, period syncing is the idea that women, who spend a lot of time together, will have their menstrual cycles aligned. However, scientific studies have been unable to prove that period syncing actually occurs. So it's actually a myth!

There have been certain theories that it might be due to pheromones – natural chemicals that send messages from one person to another – but no scientific study has proved it yet.

Why Does Your Period Sync With Your Friend?

Why Does Your Period Sync With Your Friend

There have been theories that this could be the result of pheromones (natural chemicals) that send messages from one person to another, but no scientific study has proven it yet.

If you experience period syncing with a friend or someone you live with, it's more likely the result of pure probability.

This happens because the menstrual cycle length varies from person to person. Some people have their period every 21 days, while others see their period begin every 35 days. Some people experience bleeding for a week, while others only bleed for a day or two. Some people have regular periods, while others have cycles that are less regular.

Your menstrual cycle may last for 15% to 30% of every month. With odds like that, it's highly likely that at some point you and a friend, roommate, or coworker will both be experiencing bleeding at the same time. So it's just pure statistical coincidence.
