Emotions affect not only our mental health but also our physical well-being. There are times when you may be overwhelmed by emotions but unable to process them. This may lead you to repress your emotions because it is easier than deciphering their complexity. However, this can harm your health immensely. Bottling up your emotions can result in health problems including stress, anxiety, cardiovascular issues, and high blood pressure. You may also break down socially, sabotaging your relationships.
To understand deeply about the problem and find a solution, we spoke to Mansi Poddar, a Trauma-informed Psychotherapist. She has suggested how we can release our emotions.
How To Release Repressed Emotions
Emotions are an essential part of human life. Suppressing them can make you feel like a pressure cooker with no outlet for the steam to get through. Therefore, it is vital to express how you feel. Here are some ways to seek support:
Professional Help
Therapy: A therapist can create a safe space to understand your emotions, develop coping mechanisms, and work through your deep-rooted issues.
Counselling: Counselling can offer guidance in managing emotions and recognising your problems better.
Self-Help Strategies
Journaling (Journaling Benefits): “Writing down thoughts and feelings can provide emotional release and clarity.
Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can help increase self-awareness and emotional regulation.,” says Poddar.
Physical Activity: Exercising can help you release your pent-up emotions.
Support Groups: Meeting people with similar experiences can uplift you.
Building Healthy Relationships
Open Communication: “Sharing feelings with trusted friends or family can be very helpful,” advises Poddar.
Setting Boundaries: Establish healthy boundaries to protect your emotional and mental health.
The Importance of Emotional Expression
“Healthy emotional expression is vital for well-being. It allows us to process experiences, learn from them, and build resilience. By acknowledging and expressing our emotions, we can reduce stress, improve relationships, and foster overall mental and physical health. Suppressing emotions is akin to building pressure within a container. Over time, this internal pressure can lead to a range of physical and mental health issues,” says Poddar.
If you are experiencing a larger problem with expressing your emotions, you must seek professional help from a mental health expert for better guidance.
