Cashew fruit, often overshadowed by its nut counterpart, is emerging as a potential ally in weight management. Packed with fibre, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, this tropical fruit offers numerous health benefits. We spoke to clinical dietician Ms. Vedika Premani from Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital Mumbai, who shared her insights on how cashew fruit can support your weight-loss journey.

What Is Cashew Fruit?

Cashew fruit, commonly referred to as the cashew apple, is the fleshy, bright-coloured part of the cashew plant that grows above the cashew nut. Known for its tangy and refreshing flavour, it is a tropical delight that is often underutilised. According to Ms. Premani, "Cashew fruit is a nutrient-rich yet perishable gem, loaded with vitamin C, fibre, flavonoids, carotenoids, polyphenols, amino acids, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, and iron."

While the nut gets all the attention, the fruit offers an impressive array of health benefits. Its high nutrient density makes it a great addition to a balanced diet.

Does Cashew Fruit Aid in Weight Loss?

When it comes to weight loss, cashew fruit brings a unique combination of attributes to the table. Its low-calorie content, high fibre levels, and rich antioxidant profile make it a suitable choice for those looking to shed a few pounds.

Fibre for Satiety and Gut Health:

"The high fibre content in cashew fruit enhances satiety, curbs food cravings, and promotes healthy digestion," says Ms. Premani. Fibre-rich foods like this fruit also support gut health, which is directly linked to metabolism and weight control. By helping you feel fuller for longer, cashew fruit can reduce overall calorie consumption, an essential factor in weight loss.

Antioxidants can Help Combat Fat Accumulation:

Cashew fruit contains potent antioxidants such as myricetin and quercetin derivatives. "These compounds help reduce fat accumulation and improve lipid profiles," explains Ms. Premani. Antioxidants not only support fat metabolism but also protect the body against oxidative stress, contributing to overall health during a weight-loss journey.

Low-Calorie Alternative:

Cashew fruit’s tangy and refreshing taste makes it a delightful, low-calorie snack. Replacing sugary or processed snacks with cashew fruit can significantly reduce unnecessary calorie intake while offering a nutrient boost.

While cashew fruit is beneficial, it is not a miracle solution. Ms Premani emphasises, "A balanced diet with adequate amounts of macro and micronutrients, combined with physical activity, is crucial for healthy weight loss." Including cashew fruit can complement a well-rounded diet, but depending solely on it will not yield the desired results.
