Giving birth to a baby is a moment of sheer pride and joy for every mother. With a good diet and exercise, the mother and the baby can turn out healthy. It also contributes to natural childbirth which is the process of delivering a baby with low or no medical intervention. One may use pain-numbing processes, however, delivering a baby through natural birthing methods offers long-term benefits for both mother and child.
To know more about this, we spoke to Dr Sireesha Reddy, Senior Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Hebbal, Bengaluru. She educated us about the benefits of natural childbirth.
Benefits Of Natural Childbirth For Mothers
Faster Healing
Compared to cesarean sections, natural birthing can contribute to faster healing, less postpartum pain, faster healing, and reduced complications. Our expert says, “The absence of epidurals reduces the risk of spinal headaches and other anaesthesia-related issues helping mothers to bond better with their newborns sooner and easily.”
Enhances Breastfeeding
The release of oxytocin and increased hormonal (Micronutrients To Boost Your Happy Hormones) secretion during natural birthing enhances the lactation and breastfeeding experience easier for mothers.
Benefits Of Natural Childbirth For Babies
Enhances Immunity
Babies who are nursed naturally passing through the birthing canal “are exposed to beneficial bacteria.” This can improve the health of “baby’s gut microbiome, which is essential for the baby’s immune system.”

Lesser Chances Of Allergies And Asthma
Certain studies have shown that children born naturally have lower chances of developing conditions like allergies and asthma (Yoga For Asthma). “The compression of the baby’s chest during vaginal delivery also helps remove fluid from the lungs, reducing the risk of respiratory distress,” says Dr Reddy.
Neurological Development
Natural childbirth can contribute to the baby’s neurological development. Our expert says, “The pressure changes and contractions experienced during vaginal delivery are believed to stimulate the baby’s nervous system, potentially promoting brain development.”
Dr Reddy concludes, “The birthing process itself can contribute to a stronger emotional connection between mother and child, creating a deeper sense of bonding. The long-term benefits for both mother and child make it a valuable option for those seeking a natural and minimally invasive birthing experience. However, it is important to remember that natural childbirth may not be for everyone. Certain medical conditions may require interventions for the safety of the mother and baby.”
