HerZindagi did a one-on-one interview with the man of the moment, Tarun Tahiliani and decoded all his expert insights and inputs on festive season dressing, his picks and style mantra for this glittering time of the year.

We asked Tarun what his inspiration was behind the collection and what were the major themes?

The designer promptly responded, “My most important inspiration for menswear is beautiful tailoring, comfort. We men do not wear things that are not comfortable, we won’t. Men keep saying to me that ‘my God your clothes are so comfortable, they don’t poke..’. To this I’d say, well luxury at some level you shouldn’t wear stuff that will poke, one shouldn’t wear a bridal lehenga that pokes you and makes you bleed, as I have heard a lot of brides say.”

He further added, “so driven by all the years of technical expertise and fitting, we fit every pattern on live fit models. So that we can see if they can sit, move, and see what they need.” He adds, “I’ve always loved textures, I’ve worked with weavers. In fact when we launched ‘Tasva’; I launched it in Benaras and I took all the press over there to the weavers and I said, ‘look I have let them make this fabric with viscose because if we do silk most Indians are not going to be able to afford it and I’m fine with it. Up to twenty percent polyester, so that it has strength but breathable fabrics, beautifully tailored. Half these things were samples from the shop just fitted, they are not even model samples. So my inspiration is comfort, to give people the wonderful experience because luxury at whatever level you wear is what you feel on your skin. And we men live by that much more, and we don’t care if we wear something fifty times unlike you girls in spite of Instagram so we’re good.”

We popped another question to Tarun Tahiliani regarding his luxury pret ready to wear collection titled, ‘A Celebration of Self-Expression’ asking what it’s themes were and what were his top picks from the line for the upcoming festive and wedding season.

Tahiliani reverted saying, “So I think beautifully cut, beautifully made clothes - most important. I loved all those concept sarees and also now I have seen a huge confidence and a sense of experiment by Indian women particularly and even men actually. While men are more classic and wear more funky colours, they come into their own. But women, you can go to Diwali, I went to a beautiful wedding at the chambers in Mumbai and saw this woman wearing one of my jumpsuits in black and gold and she looked stunning. So I think there is a lot more freedom from these kind of established cliche things you wear this there are lost. The younger generation experiments with everything, you all mix and match. And I think the best theme is to be yourself, be comfortable, buy fewer things that you love that are sustainable and love what you buy so that you wear it again and again and again.”
