The Lakme Fashion Week 2023 was filled with all sorts of silhouettes and fresh summer colours courtesy designer Ashish N Soni. The evening’s lineup of day one at the fashion week had Ashish N Soni showcasing his runway collection that was an all in all celebration of the 1970s inspired retro movement with elements of fresh fruits from an orchard popped in to catch the eye.

HerZindagi had a quick post show exclusive chat with Ashish N Soni to get all the sartorial ‘gyaan’ on his collection, the inspiration behind it, what elements of it apply to the ladies, festive season and much more.

Read on as we take you through an exclusive tete-a-tete with the designer.

We asked him to let us in on what his inspiration was behind such a fresh, quirky and never seen before 'Retro Orchard' collection by him?

“The show was inspired by the retro look and feel of the 1970s. I was trying to recreate that retro movement but in a manner that is relevant in the contemporary world today. And with fashion going so fast that we needed some connection with what is happening today. In terms of shapes and silhouettes I wanted to keep it relevant to the current times. But we borrowed from the oversized look, so in case we did a bell bottom then we made it even bigger.

Similarly, in terms of colour in the fruits, in the past people have called me colour blind and have said that he only works with black and white and the monochromes. Hence, I needed a starting point to borrow from and fruit happened to be that thing. So therefore the orchards got created and I said let me borrow from the fruit, the orange, the apple, the grape, the banana and so all of that and so much more emerged from there. And that is where I borrowed the colours in this collection from.”

Next we asked Ashish to give us two takeaways from his ‘Retro Orchard’ collection for the ladies.

Ashish gave us a sneak peek into it saying, “the biggest change that I had was the emphasis on the shoulders, one could see the dresses, trenches, coats having structured almost men’s shoulders on women which is not easy to do because there is a lot of construction that goes into it. I had put in a lot of effort there and then what I primarily did was use men’s fabrics for women which i also a big thing from the 1970s because until then women were sort of not allowed to wear trousers. So the sort of freedom and empowerment happened in the 1970s when they started wearing men’s suits and started dressing like men. Therefore, I borrowed the idea of using men’s fabrics for women.

We closed with a quick question on what would Ashish N Soni’s festive season picks be from his ‘Retro Orchard’ collection?

He promptly reverted saying, “the only relevant bits would be the tailored suits for the festive season.”
