Mango offers more than just a delightful taste. It is packed with several nutrients which makes it an excellent tropical delight in summer. However, its ravishing taste might compel us to overconsume it. Dr Shweta Jaiswal, Senior Dietician at Sharda Hospital shared the health risks of eating mangoes.
Here are the side effects of eating mangoes:
Mangoes are packed with fibre, which is beneficial for digestive health. However, overconsumption of fibre can lead to digestive issues such as diarrhoea, gas, and bloating. This stands true for those who are not accustomed to consuming high-fibre fruits and those with sensitive digestive systems.
Mangoes (health benefits of mango) are low in calories but high in sugar and carbohydrates. Overconsumption of mangoes can contribute to calorie intake, leading to weight gain over time. Moderation is key to enjoying mangoes as part of a balanced diet without overdoing it on calories.
Some people may experience allergic reactions to mangoes, especially if they are sensitive to certain proteins found in fruits. Itching, hives, swelling, rashes and bumps are some of the symptoms of allergic reactions. In severe cases, one might experience anaphylaxis.
If you are prone to pollen allergies, particularly birch pollen allergy, then consumption of raw mangoes may trigger the condition known as oral allergy syndrome (OAS). Itching or tingling in the mouth, lips, or throat are some of the causes of OAS.
Mangoes are rich in vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in vision, immune function, and skin health. However, excessive intake of mangoes or other sources can lead to a condition called hypervitaminosis A, characterised by symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, headaches, and even liver damage in severe cases.
