In Hindu culture, the month of Sawan is highly significant, particularly among devotees of Lord Shiva who observe Sawan Vrat (fast) with deep devotion and joy. During this auspicious period, fasting is not merely a ritual but a means of spiritual purification and reverence. According to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), Sawan will begin on July 22, 2024.
During this, various fasting recipes are prepared that celebrate the richness of Indian culinary heritage. Take a look at some of these traditional fasting recipes that are nourishing for both body and spirit:
One of the most popular dishes during Sawan Vrat is Sabudana Khichdi. Made from soaked tapioca pearls (sabudana), peanuts, and potatoes, and flavoured with cumin seeds and green chillies, this dish is not just delicious, it also provides much-needed energy during fasting. The tapioca pearls are soaked overnight to soften them, then sauteed with the spices and cooked through. Later, garnished with fresh coriander leaves and served hot with a side of yoghurt or chutney.
2. Singhare Ka Halwa
Halwa is popular across India, and during fasting, Singhare ka halwa becomes a popular choice. The halwa is prepared by roasting singhara flour in ghee until it turns aromatic and golden brown. Sugar or jaggery is then added along with water or milk to achieve a smooth consistency. Once it is cooked, it is then garnished with chopped nuts. Singhare ka halwa is loved for its rich and nutty taste.
3. Aloo Jeera
The next dish that you can try is Aloo Jeera, a simple yet flavourful dish that is commonly prepared during Sawan Vrat in every household. Diced potatoes are tempered with spices and then cooked until tender then at last garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
