Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR) is a major rail project currently being built to connect Mumbai with Ahmedabad. As of April 2025, the project has made steady progress across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli along its 508 km route. The project's total cost is estimated to be over Rs 1 lakh crore.

So far, 293 km of viaducts have been completed, while pier construction now stretches over 375 km. Its foundations cover 394 km, and 320 km of girders have already been cast, showing strong momentum on the ground. Work began in April 2020, and the Gujarat stretch of around 352 km is expected to be ready and running by 2027.

The Ministry of Railways shared a video on X (formerly known as Twitter) in 2024, offering a glimpse into the progress of India’s first bullet train project. The video highlights the use of advanced track-laying technology and the focused effort to complete the project on schedule. Once up and running, the high-speed train will cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just a few hours, marking a big step forward for rail travel in India. They wrote, “Catch glimpses of track laying for the #BulletTrain project; A significant step towards the future of travel.”

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train System Specification

According to the NHSRCL: National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited National (NHSRCL) portal, “The train's operational speed is 320 km/hr, time taken 2.07 hr (limited stops) and 2.58 hr (total stops).” The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will use Shinkansen E5 trains, known for their top speed of 350 kmph, though they’ll operate at around 320 kmph. The foundation stone for the project was laid on September 14, 2017, by the Prime Ministers of India and Japan. Soon after, work began on setting up a dedicated High-Speed Rail Training Institute (HSRTI) in Vadodara, which will train around 4,000 staff for the project.

Steel Bridge For Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor

The bridge, built under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, has been specially designed to meet the needs of the bullet train. Since it crosses NH-48 which is a busy highway connecting several major cities construction was planned with care to avoid disrupting traffic. To achieve this, the first 100-metre span of the bridge was smoothly slid 200 metres into position, allowing vehicles to keep moving with minimal disturbance.
