'Women Should Be Independent But To An Extent': Here's What Nora Fatehi Gets Wrong About Feminism

Nora Fatehi believes in traditional gender roles and criticises radical feminism.

nora fatehi interview on feminism

Some celebrities tend to grab eyeballs more than others for a lot of reasons, actress and dancer Nora Fatehi is one of them. From her sizzling dance videos to media appearances, she is a regular individual on the news headlines. Currently, she is going viral for some different reasons. The ‘Paani Paani’ dancer recently appeared on Ranveer Allahbadia’s show and spoke about a lot of things. From saying that celebrities get married for clout to discussing the topic of the evil eye, Fatehi threw a series of her opinions. But what really caught attention was her statement on feminism and how men and women are not equal, which didn’t go down well with the audience.

Nora’s Definition of Feminism

Nora, during her interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, expressed her thoughts on how feminism ruined society. “This idea of I don’t need anybody. Feminism. I don’t believe in this shit. In fact, I think, feminism f**ked up our society. The idea of being inherently completely independent and not having to get married and have kids and not having the male and female dynamics at home where the man is the provider, a breadwinner and the woman is the nurturer. I don’t believe in people who think that’s not true. I think women are nurturers, yes, they should go to work and have their own life and be independent but to a certain extent.”

Nora further added, “They should also be ready to take on the role of being a mother, a wife and a nurturer. Just like a man should be ready to take the role of being a provider, a breadwinner and a father and a husband. We call it an old-school, traditional way of thinking. I call it the normal way of thinking. It’s just that feminism fucked it up a little bit. We are all equal in more sentimental things but in societal things, we are not equal. Feminism inherently, on the base level, is great. I also advocate for women’s rights, I also want girls to go to school. However, when feminism becomes radical, it becomes dangerous for society."

Netizens Schooled Nora On The True Meaning Of Feminism

Soon after the interview, Nora's statement launched a tirade against feminists, receiving backlash from people. A lot of people online were far from impressed by the star’s polarising views on feminism. Netizens flooded the comment section with remarks like “Hey queen..you dropped your 🧠”, and other Instagram users wrote, “She doesn't know the real meaning of feminism”.

There was another user who beautifully described the meaning of feminism, “In India, at a certain time, women were not permitted to have an opinion... Many feminists worked and strived for equal opportunities for women including the right to education, right to speech, right to freedom...!! Feminism rights of women are equal to the rights of men...!! Feminism never puts down men, instead lifts women..!! Education provided to young girls will make men able to marry their partner, not slaves...!! In reality, in a middle-class family, many women work to support their family not only emotionally but also financially..!! The things didi is talking about are called ego orientation and pseudo-feminism...!! Men and women are made for each other, they will always need each other ❤.”

What Other Celebrities Got Right About Feminism

Soon after Nora’s statement spread like wildfire, Priyanka Chopra’s clip from 2018 caught attention. During her speech at the Global Education & Skills Forum (GESF) in Dubai, Priyanka took the opportunity to explain the distinction between gender equality and equity, she had a more nuanced view of the subject.

“Feminism has got such a bad name, because people think feminism is berating men, or hating on men, which is not! Women are only saying give us the joy or the ability to make our own decisions without being judged with the freedom that men have all these years. That's it!” said Chopra.

How Feminism Has Always Been Misinterpreted By The Society

Targeting the idea of feminism and degrading it by assuming it's done to put down the male gender is nothing new in the society. In relation to Nora’s opinion about men being the breadwinner and women being the nurturer, traditionally, women never got the opportunity to choose otherwise. They weren’t allowed to choose their role, build a career or have a voice of their own. They had to depend on their husband, father or uncle to meet their basic needs. Now it's 2024, and we, the women, have come a long way in fighting for our equal rights and opportunities.

What people fail to understand is that real feminism is all about having equal opportunities in every spectrum of life as men and no one questions it! Yes, men and women are partners who should work together and not against each other, but independence for women should never come with boundations.
