Actor Hina Khan has recently revealed her diagnosis of mucositis, a painful condition she is experiencing as a side effect of chemotherapy while battling stage 3 breast cancer. In an emotional Instagram post, Hina shared her struggles with the condition and sought advice from her followers on potential remedies.

Hinaโ€™s Struggles with Mucositis

In her post, Hina expressed her frustration, stating, "Another side effect of chemotherapy is mucositis. Although I am following the doctors' advice to treat it, itโ€™s really hard when you can't eat. If any of you have been through it or have known any useful remedies, please suggest." She added a heartfelt request for prayers, captioning her post with "Please suggest" and "DUA" (praying emoji).

What is Mucositis

Mucositis is characterised by painful inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes, particularly affecting the mouth and throat. This condition is a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, especially in patients undergoing treatment for cancers of the head and neck.

According to Dr Jayanta Thakuria, Director of Internal Medicine at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals, mucositis occurs due to the damage inflicted on rapidly dividing cells that line the digestive tract. This breakdown leads to inflammation, pain, and increased vulnerability to infections.

Symptoms of Mucositis

Patients suffering from mucositis may experience a range of symptoms, including:

  • Pain and discomfort in the mouth and throat
  • Ulcers and swelling
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Dry mouth and taste changes
  • Fever in severe cases

The condition can make it extremely challenging for patients to eat, drink, or even speak, significantly impacting their quality of life.

Mucositis Treatment

Managing mucositis focuses on alleviating symptoms and promoting healing. According to Dr Jayanta Thakuria, good oral hygiene is crucial; patients are advised to use gentle toothbrushes and non-alcoholic mouthwashes to prevent further irritation. Soft, bland foods that are easy to swallow can help minimise discomfort while staying hydrated is essential.

Dr Thakuria emphasises that topical treatments, such as mucosal barriers or gels, can protect irritated areas and promote healing. Additionally, systemic pain medications may be necessary for effective pain relief.

Experts suggest that while mucositis cannot be entirely prevented, prompt and appropriate management can mitigate its severity. Dr Mangesh P Kamath, Medical Oncology Director at Fortis Hospital, notes that adjusting chemotherapy doses can also help control the progression of mucositis.
