World Heart Day, celebrated on September 29 every year, emphasises the importance of heart health and raises awareness about cardiovascular diseases. The World Heart Federation has initiated a three-year campaign, which is from 2024 to 2026, aimed at raising awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the importance of maintaining heart health. The campaign theme, ‘Use Heart for Action’, encourages individuals to make heart health a priority while also urging leaders to take decisive action in addressing cardiovascular health concerns.

This year, as we reflect on the significance of heart wellness, we spotlight Bollywood actors who have bravely faced heart attacks. Their stories serve as powerful reminders of the importance of healthy lifestyles and proactive health management:

1. Sushmita Sen

Sushmita Sen, the former Miss Universe, and popular Bollywood actress, experienced a life-altering heart attack in 2023. Known for her vibrant personality and philanthropic work, her health scare became a pivotal moment. On February 27, 2023, Sushmita Sen suffered a heart attack while filming the third season of the hit series ‘Aarya’. She underwent angioplasty and had a stent placed in her heart. The news was revealed by her co-star, Vikas Kumar, who plays ACP Khan in the series. Vikas shared that the news of Sushmita’s heart attack surfaced a few days later when she decided to inform the public through Instagram. She shared a post on Instagram and wrote, “I suffered a heart attack a couple of days back…Angioplasty done…stent in place…and most importantly, my cardiologist reconfirmed ‘I do have a big heart’ 😉😄❤️

2. Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan, one of Bollywood’s leading actors, faced a health scare that resulted in a heart attack in 2007. Saif Ali Khan suffered a mild heart attack in 2007 at the age of 36. Diagnosed with myocardial infarction, a condition caused by restricted blood flow to the heart, Khan had just returned from a tour in South Africa, as per the TOI report. He experienced chest pain around 5 pm while preparing to attend the Stardust Awards at the Bandra-Kurla Complex. Prompt medical attention saw him swiftly admitted to the ICU, where an ECG revealed an irregular heartbeat.

3. Shreyas Talpade

Actor Shreyas Talpade, known for his versatile roles in films and theatre, experienced a heart attack in December 2023. Shreyas Talpade suffered a heart attack shortly after completing the shoot for his upcoming film in Mumbai. Despite appearing fine throughout the day and even engaging in light banter on set, he experienced discomfort upon returning home and eventually collapsed. He was quickly admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai, where he underwent angioplasty, according to hospital sources and media reports. In an interview, the actor expressed gratitude, stating, “This is my second chance at life.”

4. Sunil Grover

Comedian and actor Sunil Grover faced a heart attack in 2022, which was a wake-up call for the beloved entertainer. Sunil Grover, known for his hilarious characters on India's popular comedy show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, had a heart attack in early 2022 at the age of 44. He underwent four bypass surgeries as part of his treatment. Sunil Grover was hospitalised after suffering a heart attack. He later underwent bypass surgery and was discharged on February 3, 2022, from the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai. Even though he had blockages in his heart, Sunil continued working on a web series before deciding to go for surgery, according to the TOI report.

5. Annu Kapoor

Veteran actor Annu Kapoor, recognised for his extensive contributions to Indian cinema and television, also experienced a heart attack. Annu Kapoor was hospitalised on January 26, 2023, after experiencing chest pain, which he later confirmed was a heart attack. He was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, where doctors from the cardiology department treated him. The hospital later shared that his condition was stable, and he was recovering well. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the actor said, “It was a heart attack. I am getting better, and now on the road to recovery. Things are looking better.”
