World TB Day was initiated on March 24, 1882, when Dr Robert Koch discovered Mycobacterium tuberculosis at the Berlin Physiology Society. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a bacterium that causes TB. It was also known as the 'White Plague', responsible for one out of every seven deaths in Europe and America. Dr Robert's discovery proved that TB is an infectious disease and can be cured with modern medicine.
In 1982, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD), co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO), recognised March 24 as World TB Day under the theme 'Defeat TB: Now and Forever' to boost global awareness and control. Additionally, the WHO and United Nations officially recognised World TB Day as an annual event during the mid 1990s.

World TB Day signifies the raising awareness of a global crisis as it remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases, causing over 1.2 million deaths every year.
