World TB Day 2025: History

The origins of World Tuberculosis Day can be traced back centuries. The term ‘tuberculosis’ was first introduced by Johann Schönlein in 1834, though evidence suggests that the disease, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has existed for millions of years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Throughout history, TB has been known by different names across cultures. The Greeks called it ‘phthisis,’ the Hebrews referred to it as ‘schachepheth,’ and the Romans named it ‘tabes.’ During the 18th and 19th centuries, the disease was commonly known as the ‘white plague’ or ‘consumption’ due to its characteristic effect of making patients appear pale and severely thin.

A major medical breakthrough occurred on March 24, 1882, when Dr Robert Koch identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the cause of TB. This groundbreaking discovery laid the foundation for future diagnosis and treatment. In recognition of this milestone, World Tuberculosis Day was officially established to be observed on March 24 each year.
