Waking Up Tired Despite Enough Sleep? Here’s the Reason, Expert Explains

Waking up exhausted even after 7–8 hours of sleep? A cardiology expert explains how a very low heart rate at night, known as bradycardia, could be affecting your energy levels.

Many people assume that getting seven to eight hours of sleep automatically guarantees a refreshed morning. However, some individuals still wake up feeling drained, dizzy or unusually fatigued despite spending enough time in bed. While stress, lifestyle habits and poor sleep quality often play a role, there may be another lesser-known explanation: the heart rate slowing down too much during sleep.

According to Dr Himanshu Gupta, Consultant-Cardiology at Manipal Hospital Jaipur, a condition known as Bradycardia could be responsible for this unusual tiredness in some people.

How a Low Heart Rate During Sleep Can Affect You

During sleep, the body naturally slows down. The heart rate drops as the body enters a state of deep rest, allowing the heart and other organs to recover. For most healthy adults, this change is normal and does not cause any problems.

However, when the heart rate falls too low, the body may struggle to supply adequate blood flow to vital organs, including the brain. This can leave a person feeling exhausted even after a full night’s rest.

“The heart normally beats under 60 times per minute during sleep, which is a natural physiological response when the body is resting. But if the heart rate drops too much, organs and the brain may not receive adequate blood flow. This can leave the body under stress and lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness or weakness even after sufficient sleep,” explains Dr Gupta.

What Causes Night-Time Bradycardia?

Night-time bradycardia may develop for several reasons. In some cases, it is linked to changes in the heart’s electrical system, which controls the rhythm of the heartbeat. Ageing-related changes in the heart may also contribute to the condition.

Certain underlying health issues can also play a role. For example, heart disease, thyroid disorders or electrolyte imbalances may affect the heart’s rhythm and lead to a slower pulse during sleep.

Sleep-related breathing problems, such as Sleep Apnea, may also trigger abnormal heart rhythms. This condition causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, which can disturb oxygen levels and influence the heart rate.

Bradycardia Warning Signs

Feeling tired in the morning may be one of the early signs of nighttime bradycardia, but it is rarely the only symptom. People experiencing this condition may also notice dizziness, shortness of breath or episodes of chest discomfort.

In more severe cases, individuals might experience irregular or skipped heartbeats. If the heart rate remains very low, it may increase the risk of fainting and cause mental fog or difficulty concentrating.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If persistent fatigue continues despite adequate sleep, it may be worth discussing the issue with a doctor. A medical evaluation can help identify whether an underlying heart rhythm problem is responsible.

Treatment depends largely on the cause. In some cases, addressing conditions such as thyroid problems or electrolyte imbalances can help restore a normal heart rhythm. However, when the issue stems from problems in the heart’s electrical system and leads to symptoms like dizziness, fatigue or fainting, doctors may recommend a pacemaker to regulate the heartbeat.
