Blast From The Past: Ratna & Supriya Pathak's Old Sitcom Goes Viral; Watch Here

We, the 90s kids, have all grown up watching Ratna Pathak Shah as Maya Sarabhai from the popular comedy Hindi serial Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Supriya Pathak as Hansa Parekh from another comedy show Khichdi. But, back in the 1980s Maya Sarabhai and Hansa Parekh were part of the same serial, well at least the leading actors were.

A clip from the 1985 Hindi television show Idhar Udhar which aired on Doordarshan starred the real-life sisters and veteran actors went viral after an Instagram page named Bollywood Direct uploaded it. In the clip, the Pathak sisters are seen discussing whether to keep a male or a female paying guest in the flat where they are paying guests themselves. While Supriya's character they should keep a female paying guest, Ratna's character, who is an air hostess by profession, says she prefers a male guest as they will help in more household chores if you merely smile at them or talk to them nicely. She also adds that men have less ego problems with women with the forever intention of impressing girls.

One user wrote, "As the clip went viral and received thousands of views and likes, fans expressed their excitement and began wondering what multiverse their favourite Maya Sarabhai and Hansa Parekh could have been a part of."

"I have actually watched this . I loved the comedy and the script. Similarly Tara one show on Zee when these Saas Bahu drama wasn't ruining the TV there were actually good shows," another wrote.

While another wrote, "The styling, the makeup, the set... It's a 1985 serial and cut to 37 years today it's still so natural, likeable, bold and watchable. Aaj Kisne socha tha, 2023 mein we've gone ahead with time and backwards in content!"

"There were two crossover episodes of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai where Khichdi family visits and Hansa ( Supriya Pathak) appears as Maya Sarabhai’s distant cousin. So, not the only time," commented another.

Many came into the comment section to enquire about the serial’s name and where to watch it. Many also rued about the serials in the 80s and 90s being way better than the present Ekta Kapoor serials and teir copycats.

Directed by Anand Mahendroo and produced by Shobha Doctor, the first episode of Idhar Udhar from which the clip went viral from features Sunita (Ratna) and Poonam (Supriya) who look after Mrs Breganza’s flat where they live as a paying guest. As Mrs Breganza leaves for Australia to visit her daughter, the two sisters puts out an ad in the newspaper looking for a male paying guest with “dashing appearance and a good sense of humour”.
