Set back in 1990s Bihar, the SonyLIV series 'Maharani' unfolds a political drama marked by murders, scams, and caste-based conflicts. Across its 10 episodes, the show chronicles the unexpected rise of an uneducated homemaker to power and the challenges she faces in governing the state. The series has received considerable acclaim from viewers, and with season three on the horizon, we provide a recap of season two so that you don't have to re-watch the second season.
Plot Of ‘Maharani’ Season 2
As Bheema Bharti (Sohum Shah) orchestrates a shadow government from behind bars, accusations of mismanagement surround CM Rani Bharti, (Huma Qureshi) intensifying the anti-incumbency sentiment, jungle raj, and corruption in Bihar. The state grapples with lawlessness and Rani bears the brunt of blame for the prevailing 'jungle raj,' as asserted by the opposition.
Amidst internal party strife and navigating the challenges posed by her husband and political adversaries scheming to topple her administration, Rani finds herself compelled to take bold actions that could reshape the entire political landscape.
Recap Of ‘Maharani’ Season 2
The second season begins a year after Bheema goes to jail. Even in prison, he has a comfortable setup with VIP perks and regular visits from a party colleague named Kirti. Upset by what he sees as his wife's betrayal, Bheema, with the help of his right-hand man Mishra and brother-in-law Sanyasi, strives to regain power. Rani faces opposition from Naveen and his mentor Ghanshyam in the state legislature, but the real challenge is closer to home.
While Rani proves she's tough, her habit of bossing around the colleagues causes issues. She emphasises that the government isn't like a bus where everyone can be accommodated.

Bheema Bharti eventually gets out of prison and gets engaged in an extramarital relationship with Kirti Singh. Faced with his wife Rani Bharti's refusal to collaborate with a corrupt and tarnished minister within their party, Bheema decides to establish a new political party. Consequently, Bihar now witnesses three contenders vying for power: 1) Rani Bharti's Party, 2) Navin Kumar's Party, and 3) Bheema Bharti's Newly Launched Party.
Upon the announcement of election results, none of the parties secures a clear majority. The ensuing political landscape becomes a murky game, with each party striving to garner support from others. Amid these manoeuverings to secure the necessary majority for forming a government, Bheema Bharti meets a tragic end. He is poisoned and murdered during the Holi Party Celebration at his residence.
Film reviewer Nandini Ramnath calls Huma’s character in the second season ‘too good to be true.’ She said, “This chief minister who shares none of the social prejudices of her peers and clings to power simply so that she can transform Bihar.”

The framing of Rani unfolds through the efforts of a special CID team assigned to investigate Bheema's death. While one member, Martin, remains honest and upright, the other two are planted with malicious intent to sabotage the enquiry. Due to their ulterior motives and connections with higher authorities, including the Governor of Bihar, Martin's report is rejected. The manipulated final report suggests that Rani Bharti conspired with her secretary and brother to plan her husband's murder.
As Rani passes by figures like Naveen Kumar and Gauri Shankar Pandey in the concluding scene, she reassures Naveen of her impending return to seek justice for Bheema's death.
