'House Of The Dragon' Season 2: New Characters Revealed

Westeros fanatics, prepare yourselves! The epic saga for the Iron Throne reignites as ‘House of the Dragon’ swoops back in for its highly anticipated second season. Mark your calendars, for June 17 as HBO unleashes fire-breathing dragons and the scheming houses of George R.R. Martin's world once more. This season promises a fresh wave of characters ready to carve their names into the bloody history known as the Dance of the Dragons.

But who are these new faces vying for power?

Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull

Stepping into the fantastical realm of Westeros is a dream come true for many actors, and for Abubakar Salim (of ‘Raised by Wolves’ and ‘Assassin's Creed: Origins’ fame), that dream becomes reality as he portrays Alyn of Hull in Season 2. According to HBO's official description, Alyn is "a sailor in the Velaryon fleet who served in the Stepstones campaign," hinting at a character with a seasoned past.

Freddie Fox as Gwayne Hightower

Recognise Freddie Fox from his roles as King Hugo in ‘The Great’ or ‘Spider’ Webb in ‘Slow Horses’? Season 2 introduces him as Ser Gwayne Hightower, the eldest son of Lord Otto Hightower. Gwayne is the brother of Dowager Queen Alicent and heir to the prestigious House Hightower of Oldtown.

Simon Russell Beale as Simon Strong

A seasoned theatre veteran, Simon Russell Beale brings his experience to the role of Simon Strong. Gayle Rankin, known for her roles in ‘Perry Mason,’ ‘GLOW,’ and ‘Kindred,’ joins the cast as the enigmatic Alys Rivers. This captivating character is shrouded in mystery, but whispers suggest she'll become entangled with the ambitious and volatile Prince Aemond Targaryen (played by Ewan Mitchell) though perhaps not in Season 2, as the Blacks still hold Harrenhal by the season's end.

This thrilling new chapter builds upon the success of the first season, which aired from August 21st to October 23rd, 2022, and garnered record-breaking viewership for HBO (Euphoria Season 3 Shoot Delayed, Everything You Need To Know). The Season 2 renewal, was announced just a week after the premiere.

Filming for Season 2 commenced on April 11th, 2023, at Warner Bros.' Leavesden Studios, and thankfully, it remained unaffected by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. With scripts finalized before filming began, the production schedule stayed on track, ensuring a fiery return for House of the Dragon this June.
