Veteran Benefits that are designed to help families of deceased veterans get faster benefits are undergoing some major reforms by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). With these changes, the families can now get benefits hassle-free, according to the department's press release.
“The last thing survivors need in their time of grief is frustrating red tape and bureaucracy. That’s why we are creating a better system to more quickly and effectively provide survivors the services, support and compassion they’ve earned,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.
VA Announces Major Changes To Veteran Benefits
The VA is taking all the necessary steps to improve support for the families of veterans. Firstly, the VA is moving its Office of Survivors Assistance (OSA) under the direct oversight of the VA Secretary. This change aims to restore the OSA's role as a key policy advisor, after being buried in bureaucracy since 2021. Additionally, a new specialised team in Philadelphia will be dedicated to guiding families through complex claims, such as Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).

Experts will provide personalised support to address communication gaps and expedite approvals. The VA is also implementing new technology upgrades to speed up claims processing, reduce delays, and enhance overall services for survivors. Currently, the VA automates over 1,000 DIC payments daily, and these upgrades are expected to further improve efficiency.

The goal is to streamline the process and get eligible families the benefits they deserve, with the VA stating "our goal is to get to 'yes' for eligible families." The reforms aim to simplify a system that has been criticised for being overwhelming for grieving families. With the new changes, survivors can expect clearer guidance, faster decisions, and fewer bureaucratic hurdles. These measures are part of the VA's efforts to improve the experience of families of fallen service members in receiving their due benefits.
