The Odia film industry has lost one of its brightest stars. Veteran actor Uttam Mohanty, a beloved figure in Odia cinema, passed away on the night of February 27, 2025, at the age of 66. He had been battling with severe liver-related health complications and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Delhi. On February 8, Mohanty was airlifted from Bhubaneswar to Delhi for specialised care, but unfortunately, could not overcome his illness. He leaves behind his wife, the acclaimed actress Aparajita Mohanty, and their son Babushan, who has also made a name for himself in Odia cinema.

Chief Minister Expresses Grief
The news of his demise has left Odisha and the film fraternity in mourning. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took to social media to express his grief, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Uttam Mohanty, Odisha’s beloved actor. His loss has left an irreplaceable void in the world of Odia art and cinema. The mark he left on the industry will forever keep him alive in the hearts of his audience. I pray for his soul to find eternal peace and extend my heartfelt condolences to his grieving family.” In honour of his immense contributions to Odia culture, the Chief Minister has announced that Mohanty’s final rites will be conducted with full state honours.

Uttam Mohanty’s Career in Odia Cinema
Uttam Mohanty’s journey in cinema began in 1977 with the Odia film ‘Abhimaan’, and over the next four decades, he became one of the most respected and versatile actors in the industry. With over 130 Odia films to his credit, he captivated audiences with his heartfelt performances in classics like ‘Nijhum Ratira Sathi’ (1979), ‘Phula Chandana’ (1982), ‘Jhiati Sita Pari’ (1983), and ‘Danda Balunga’ (1984). His ability to bring authenticity and depth to his roles made him a household name in Odisha.
But Mohanty’s talent wasn’t confined to Odia cinema alone. He also made a mark in Bengali films, starring in around 30 productions, and even ventured into Hindi cinema with ‘Naya Zaher’. His work extended to television as well, where he appeared in popular serials like ‘Sara Akasha’, showcasing his versatility across different mediums.
