Popular singer and actor, Selena Gomez has been MIA from Instagram lately. Looks like all her 378 million+ followers will have to wait for much longer to see her come back on social media, all thanks to the netizens who have been harassing her ever since her breakup with Justin Bieber almost five years ago. In an interview with a popular culture and fashion magazine, Gomez recently hinted at her relationship with Beiber.
During the interaction, Gomez said, “I went through a hard time in a breakup, and I didn’t want to see any of the [feedback]—not necessarily about the relationship, but the opinions of me versus [someone] else."
“There’d be thousands of really nice comments, but my mind goes straight to the mean one. People can call me ugly or stupid, and I’m like, whatever. But these people get detailed. They write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety…I couldn’t do it anymore. It was a waste of my time,” she added.
Most people on the internet don't hesitate before spewing hate online and honestly, I am not surprised. Thanks to the power of anonymity they feel free to make the most hurtful comments, especially on celebrity posts. It all comes down to just one thing, it is after all a reflection of our society, the world we inhabit.
For women, this world is a bizarre place to be. What Selena Gomez opened up about is something that has been here for the longest time. Though she didn't take names, she hinted at being pitted against Bieber's wife Hailey.
Yes, the condition is much worse for public figures but it isn't pleasing for us common folks. Wear a short skirt and they will tag you 'too modern', be muscular and they will come out to define femininity for you, start dating and they will question your character, date someone of your own gender and they will assassinate your image.
Women are always attacked no matter what and it just doesn't stop. I wonder how strenuous it is for society to understand that it is none of their business. Yes, you have all the freedom to express your opinions in exhilaration but we don’t need to be and aren't game for it!
So, dear society, I have a few things to say to you , here are all the things I want you to stop caring about, since they are none of your business!
Who I Date
No matter whom or how many partners I date, you wouldn't hang back from calling me a skank. So, why not go ahead and do it in the comfort of your own home and stay out of my face.
Who I Marry
I can have an arranged marriage and lead a happy life or I can marry someone I truly love and still be joyful.

Why I Wear That Outfit
Over the years, I have realised that my dear society loves keeping an eye on my everyday fits. I will wear a salwar suit and you will tag me a 'behenji', I will wear a midi and you will call me 'westernised'. Either way, I give two hoots about your opinion.
Why I Look A Certain Way
I can be underweight or obese, both ways, I am sure you will feel that I am restricting myself on my chances to to get married. Well, it is my body, who knows about it better? So just stop with those body shaming comments.
Why I Have A Career
