A 13-year-old student was sexually assaulted by three teachers at a government school in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district. The accused were arrested on February 5, 2025, under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and have been placed in police custody for 15 days. Authorities confirmed that the survivor has undergone a medical examination, and the results are pending.
Three teachers from a government school in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district have been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old female student. The survivor has undergone a medical examination, and the results are awaited, according to the police. The girl had been absent from school for a month, prompting school authorities to visit her home to check on her well-being. It was during this visit that the incident came to light, leading the Child Welfare Committee to take immediate action.
The District Education Officer (DEO) has suspended the accused teachers, who were arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and remanded them to 15 days of police custody, as stated by Krishnagiri Collector C. Dinesh Kumar, as per ANI.
The alleged crime occurred in the school restroom on January 2, 2025. However, the incident was only reported on February 2, 2025, a month later, when the student’s parents informed the school headmaster about the assault. A senior police official familiar with the case confirmed these details.
Moreover, Krishnagiri District Collector C Dinesh Kumar refuted rumours suggesting that an abortion had been performed, clarifying that the survivor was not pregnant.
The incident has sparked widespread protests in the area, with local residents and the girl’s family demanding stringent action against the accused. On February 5, 2025, an enraged crowd blocked a road outside the school in protest. Police were deployed to control the situation, and officials assured the public that legal measures would be pursued.
The case has also drawn sharp political reactions, with opposition leaders criticising the state government for failing to ensure student safety. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami slammed the DMK government, stating as per Indian Express, “When I raised concerns about the safety of students in government schools, the government dismissed them. What will they say now?”
BJP state president K Annamalai linked the increase in sexual crimes to governance failures, citing a decline in arrests under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act as proof of deteriorating law enforcement. AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran highlighted other recent cases of sexual assault in Tamil Nadu and called for enhanced monitoring and security in schools.
This recent assault incident follows another major case that occurred just months earlier, which also shook Tamil Nadu. On December 23, 2024, a second-year student of Anna University was reportedly sexually assaulted on the university campus, according to the Chennai Police.
Meanwhile, the 13-year-old victim has received the required counselling, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
