Details of Mihir’s Final Day

“I am a grieving mother fighting for justice for my son, who was a happy, active, and loving child,” Rajna said. She recounted how Mihir returned home from school at around 2:45 pm that day. By 3:50 pm, he was gone.

Rajna also shared disturbing details, including screenshots of social media chats that showed how Mihir was subjected to degrading treatment. One such message read: “They made Mihir play a game where he spread his fingers out and instead of using a pencil to hit between the gaps of his fingers, they made him use a knife. They also made him lick toilet seats and pushed his head into toilets and flushed them.”

The family first became aware of the severity of Mihir’s abuse after receiving messages from his friends following his tragic death. His friends revealed details of the torment he faced, including daily physical abuse, verbal insults, and racial discrimination due to his skin colour.

Social Media Outrage: Public Calls for Justice

Mihir’s death has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with users demanding accountability from both the perpetrators and the school. Comments with #Justiceformihir flooded in, with one user writing, “If they’re old enough for such cruelty, they’re old enough to face real consequences. We don’t need demons like them.” Another post read, “Global Public School authorities need to be punished for allowing such cruelty to take place under their watch.”

In the wake of his death, Mihir’s family has filed a formal complaint with the Kerala Director General of Police (DGP). They have also sought an investigation into the role of Global Public School in Mihir’s suffering, accusing the school of failing to prevent the ragging and harassment.

What Indian Laws Say About Ragging

Mihir’s tragic death highlights the failure to enforce India’s anti-ragging laws effectively. The University Grants Commission (UGC) implemented strict anti-ragging guidelines in 2009, which mandate that institutions set up anti-ragging committees and ensure that ragging is strictly prohibited both on and off-campus. Despite these regulations, incidents of ragging continue to plague schools and colleges across India.

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) outlines severe penalties for those involved in ragging, including criminal charges under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), and even Section 302 (murder) in extreme cases. Additionally, the Supreme Court has issued guidelines to prevent ragging in educational institutions, mandating the establishment of helplines for students to report incidents of abuse. However, Mihir’s case reveals a glaring gap between policy and practice.

Police Investigation into Mihir’s Death

The Thrippunithura Hill Palace Police have registered an FIR under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) based on a complaint filed by Mihir’s family. SHO Ananda Babu K B confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating, “The probe into the unnatural death of the teenager is ongoing. Along with that, we have received a complaint from his mother, in which she makes serious accusations against certain students.”

Rajna has also approached the Child Welfare Commission, seeking an enquiry into allegations of harassment involving a vice principal from Mihir’s previous school, GEMS Kochi. She accused the school of prioritising its reputation over the well-being of its students.
