Rakshabandhan is one festival that celebrates the bond of brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi (full moon day) in the month of Shravan. This year it is falling on August 3. From the right time to tying the rakhi to the tithi when it should be avoided by all means, here is a low down on everything you need to know about Rakhi this year.
This year the full moon shall be there from 9:28 PM on August 2 until 9:28 PM on August 3. You can tie the Rakhi on your brother's wrist between 9:28 in the morning to 9:17 at night. However, the best timing which is also called Aparahna Muhurat, is between 1:48 pm to 4:29 pm. Another timing which is okay, in case you miss this one, is Praodsh time which is between 7:10 pm and 9:17 pm.
According to this story, while Lord Krishna was flying a kite, he accidentally cut his hand. This made Draupadi tear a small part of her saree which she then tied on his cut. Maybe that is why we see so much of this in films today. In return, the Lord promised Draupadi his lifelong protection at any condition. That is when Draupadi was protected by him during Cheer Haran.

This festival was not only about brothers and sisters. According to mythology, Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra tied a red thread on Lord Indra’s wrist before he went on to fight the demons.
A cool and a rarely known fact is this that Rani Karnavati Of Chittor had sent a Rakhi to Humayun, as she wanted his protection in saving her kingdom. The Kingdom was attacked by Bahadur Shah. Although Humayun was a little late and failed to save the Queen, he respected the promise. He defeated Bahadur Shah Zafar and gave the kingdom to her surviving son.

Tying rakhi at the right time is important but so is the time when you should definitely avoid doing so. Avoid the Bhadra period, which the early first-half of the Purnima day.
Bhadra Panchha: 5:16 a.m to 6:28 a.m
Bhadra Mukha: 6:28 a.m to 8:28 a.m
Bhadra ends at 9:28 a.m.
The timing of Rakhi festival this year also coincides with Gauri Pujan, which falls on Shravan Purnima. Even for Brahmins, it is an important day especially for those who change their Janeyu or sacred thread.
