Broken bangles, discarded tiles, ceramic pieces, bottles, old sinks and even electrical waste were used to create sculptures and pathways. What was once rubbish became a stunning art form, making the garden an early symbol of recycling and environmental awareness.

The Rock Garden was created by Nek Chand, a self-taught artist and government employee. Chandigarh District portal states, “It is also known as Nek Chand’s Rock Garden after its founder Nek Chand, a government official who started the garden secretly in his spare time in 1957.”
He started building the garden secretly in the late 1950s using leftover materials from demolished villages. Working quietly in his free time, Nek Chand turned his vision into reality without formal artistic training, proving that creativity does not need certificates.
For nearly 18 years, the Rock Garden was built illegally on government land. Incredible India Ministry of Tourism mentions, “For 18 years, Nek Chand's labour of love remained a closely guarded secret, a tale of art woven in the shadows, until its existence was unveiled to the authorities in 1975.” It further states, “Nek Chand, the visionary architect of this dream, was entrusted with its care and given a team of 50 artisans to continue his mission. In 1976, the gates to this enchanting realm were opened.”

The garden is best known for its thousands of sculptures, including human figures, animals, dancers and musicians. According to Chandigarh Tourism states, “The Layout of Garden is based on the fantasy of a Lost Kingdom. It has 14 different chambers like the forecourt. It also highlights, Sculptures are created using items such as bangles, ceramic pots, tiles, bottles and Electric waste. The garden is a mixture of Landscape, architecture, sculpture and mythology.”
These figures are arranged in groups, often telling stories of village life, celebrations and traditional culture. Each sculpture has its own character, making the garden lively and engaging.
