As the colours of spring begin to awaken the earth, the auspicious occasion of Phulera Dooj marks the beginning of the Holi celebrations in India. This ‘festival of flowers’ takes place in the Braj area, which includes Mathura and Vrindavan, and is a celebration of the union of Lord Krishna and Radha Rani. This day of pure love and joy is recognised as a Siddha Muhurat, making it one of the most auspicious days of the year for new beginnings and weddings.
In 2026, Phulera Dooj will be celebrated on Thursday, February 19. The day is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi (second day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Phalgun.
Dwitiya Tithi Begins: February 18, 2026, at 4:57 PM
Dwitiya Tithi Ends: February 19, 2026, at 3:58 PM
Abhijit Muhurat: 12:12 PM to 12:58 PM
Phulera Dooj is a colourful Hindu festival observed on the second day of the growing moon in the month of Phalgun, marking the formal beginning of the Holi celebrations. Based on the legendary love of Radha and Krishna, it is commonly known as the ‘Festival of Flowers,’ where the people of Braj (Mathura and Vrindavan) observe a symbolic Holi with flower petals instead of colours. Astrologically, it is an Aboojh Muhurat, a day so holy and pure that no horoscope analysis is needed for the performance of pious rituals such as weddings and new business starts.
Phulera Dooj has a rich history that is inextricably linked with the Puranas and the legendary love saga of Radha and Krishna. It is said that once, due to his busy schedule, Lord Krishna could not come to Vrindavan for a long time. Radha Rani, upset over the separation, was saddened, and as a result, the greenery of Braj began to wither away, and the flowers began to dry up. When Krishna finally came back, he was moved by the sight of the parched nature around him. To bring back the joy, he playfully picked up a flower and flung it at Radha. Radha Rani retaliated, and soon the Gopis and the cowherds also joined in, pelting each other with flower petals. This 'Flower Holi' brought back the essence of Braj, as it was the day when nature flourished in the presence of divine love.

Phulera Dooj is a day of immense spiritual and astronomical significance:
It is one of the very few days in the Hindu calendar that is completely free from doshas. There is no need to refer to the panchang to begin new initiatives or perform weddings. It is also a day when the worship of Radha-Krishna is believed to enhance marital relationships and help unmarried people find their life partners. It is the beginning of the countdown to Holi, moving from the yellow colours of Basant Panchami to the floral festivities of Phulera Dooj.
The following rituals are performed by devotees to attain the blessings of the divine couple:
Clean the puja altar and decorate it with colourful fresh flowers such as roses, marigolds, and jasmine.
Clean the idols of Radha and Krishna with rose water. Dress them in bright, spring-coloured clothes.
Offer a small bunch of flowers to the deities as a symbolic gesture of playing Holi with them.
Make traditional sweets such as Poha, Khoya Barfi, or Makhana Kheer. Make sure to add Tulsi leaves to the offering to Lord Krishna.
Chant the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ or ‘Radhe-Krishna’ 108 times.
