History of Holika Dahan

The tradition of Holika Dahan comes from ancient Hindu mythology, specifically the story of Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, while his father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu, demanded that everyone worship him instead of the gods. When Prahlad refused, his father ordered his sister Holika, who was immune to fire, to sit with him in a fire.

Holika agreed, believing she would remain unharmed, but divine grace protected Prahlad while Holika herself died. This symbolises the victory of good over evil.
