History of Holi

Holi has deep roots in Hindu mythology and tradition. It honours the triumph of good over evil, symbolised through the legend of Prahlad and Holika. According to the ancient story:

  • Prahlad was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, while his aunt Holika, who had special powers, attempted to harm him.

  • Holika sat with Prahlad in a high fire, but only Holika was burnt, and Prahlad was saved by divine grace.

  • This story represents the victory of faith and righteousness over evil.

Significance of Holi

On the night before Holi, people light bonfires (Holika Dahan) to symbolise this legend. Families gather around the fire to offer prayers, perform rituals and seek blessings for prosperity and positivity in the year ahead.

The next day, Holi is all about joy, togetherness and letting go of old grievances. People of all ages play with dry colour powders (gulal) and coloured water, dance in the streets, and share sweets, music and laughter with friends, families and neighbours.

Drik Panchang states, “Places related to the life of Lord Krishna are known as Braj regions. Holi rituals in Braj regions - Mathura, Vrindavan, Gowardhan, Gokul, Nandagaon and Barsana - are the most famous ones. The Lathmar Holi - the traditional Holi festivity in Barsana is world famous.”

Holi also marks the arrival of spring, signifying new beginnings, growth and renewal. It reminds us to shed negativity and embrace love, unity and harmony.
