History of Lathmar Holi: The Radha-Krishna Legend

The tradition is an enactment of a divine prank performed by Lord Krishna. According to the tradition:

  • Krishna, who resided in Nandgaon, decided to prank Radha and her friends in Barsana.

  • Radha and the other friends, who felt the urge to play a prank in return and teach Krishna a lesson, chased Krishna and his friends away with sticks.

  • To date, the men of Nandgaon are referred to as the sons-in-law of Barsana. They go to Barsana with the aim of colouring the women, but are instead faced with the traditional lathi charge.

Religious Significance of Lathmar Holi in Braj

It is a celebration of the love between Radha and Krishna. For the devotees, being beaten by a stick in the Radha land is a blessing and a means of melting the ego. It is one of the few festivals where women play a dominant role, and this represents the power of the feminine spirit.
