Lathmar Holi serves as the vibrant soul of the Braj region’s month-long ‘Rangotsav,’ transforming the narrow, historic lanes of Barsana into a spirited arena of devotion and playful battle. Celebrated just days before the main festival of colours, this unique tradition sees the women of Barsana playfully striking the men of Nandgaon with sticks, reenacting the divine legend of Radha and Krishna. The atmosphere is electrified by traditional folk songs, massive clouds of gulal, and a deep sense of spiritual joy that attracts thousands of devotees.
Date: Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
Time: 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Location: Shri Radha Rani Temple and the ‘Rangili Gali’ of Barsana.
Lathmar is a direct translation of beating with sticks. It is a unique festival where women of Barsana beat men from the neighbouring village of Nandgaon with wooden sticks called lathis. The men, on the other hand, carry large shields made of leather or wood to safeguard themselves while singing folk songs to tease the women.

The tradition is an enactment of a divine prank performed by Lord Krishna. According to the tradition:
Krishna, who resided in Nandgaon, decided to prank Radha and her friends in Barsana.
Radha and the other friends, who felt the urge to play a prank in return and teach Krishna a lesson, chased Krishna and his friends away with sticks.
To date, the men of Nandgaon are referred to as the sons-in-law of Barsana. They go to Barsana with the aim of colouring the women, but are instead faced with the traditional lathi charge.
It is a celebration of the love between Radha and Krishna. For the devotees, being beaten by a stick in the Radha land is a blessing and a means of melting the ego. It is one of the few festivals where women play a dominant role, and this represents the power of the feminine spirit.

As the afternoon comes near, the men from Nandgaon arrive wearing their traditional white kurtas and turbans. They proceed towards the temple in a procession. The women are waiting in the narrow lanes with their sticks, and the battle begins with huge clouds of pink, yellow, and orange powder.
A day earlier, a messenger from Nandgaon came to Barsana to invite the villagers to Holi, a ritualistic event that includes Laddu Holi, where sweets are showered on the public.
The men are not allowed to retaliate. Their only protection is the shield and their agility.
The participants sing Hori songs, which are folk songs that depict the playful behaviour of the divine couple.
No festival is complete without local cuisine. Thandai, a spiced milk drink, and Gujiya are distributed as prasad.
