India celebrates a moment of pride as Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale claims Bronze in the 50m Rifle 3P event at the Paris Olympics. The 28-year-old scored 451.4 in the final and secured 3rd position. It marks a historic moment as Swapnil becomes the first Indian to bag a medal in the Olympics shooting competition on Thursday.

The 50m Rifle three positions final event is divided into three rounds of 15 shots each, which include kneeling, prone, and standing positions respectively. Swapnil was earlier placed sixth with a score of 153.3 after the kneeling stage in the final. By the end of the prone stage, he moved up to fifth place with a total score of 310.1, just 0.6 points behind third-placed Serhiy Kulish of Ukraine. In the first five standing shots, Kusale scored 51.1, securing the fourth position, just 0.4 points away from third spot.

After the three final rounds, the elimination round is conducted. Swapnil was placed in the seventh position in the qualifying round with a total score of 590, including 38 inner 10s (Xs), from three positions. The first medal for India came on Monday when Manu Bhaker won a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event, making her the first Indian shooter to win an Olympic medal. On Tuesday, Bhaker won another bronze with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m pistol mixed team event. Manu became the first post-independence Indian athlete to win two medals in a single Olympic edition.

Brought up in an agricultural background, Swapnil Kusale currently works as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) with the Pune Railway Division. Watching his deep inclinations towards sports, his father enrolled him in Maharashtra’s Krida Prabodhini, a primary sports program. After a year of intensive physical training, Kusale chose shooting as his primary sport.
His accomplishments to date include:
- Gold medal in the 50m rifle prone 3 event in the junior category at the Asian Shooting Championships in Kuwait, 2015.
- Surpassed Gagan Narang and Chain Singh in the 50m rifle prone event in the National Shooting Championship in Tughlakabad.
- A gold medal in the 50m rifle 3 position event in the 61st National Championship in Thiruvananthapuram.
