At the beginning of this new year, it is time to celebrate a lot of festivals like Makar Sankranti. This is one of the much-awaited festivals in North India. The day is considered really auspicious. It is celebrated a day after Lohri. It is the harvest season for farmers. In some regions, women also pray to God on this day for the longevity of their husbands. The day is also special as the Lord Sun transits to the tropic of Capricorn.
People dress in new clothes this day, make sweets, fly kites and welcome a new beginning. Hindu weddings begin from this day as it is believed that the day brings a lot of happiness.

According to Hindu Dharma, this day is the onset of the Uttarayan period. It is said that a person who dies in six months after the beginning of Uttarayan period reaches heaven directly. As per science, this day is very important as it affects the weather. Hindus perform religious deeds on this day, it is good to feed needy people on this day. Pandit Dayanand Shastri suggests donating ghee, sesame seeds, and warm clothes on this day.
As it is the festival of the Sun God, one must worship them by offering them water. It is said to be a good day to offer prayers to your ancestors. It is a good day to take a bath at the Ganges.
It is the harvest festival and on this day, you should prepare, khichadi, til and gur and celebrate new beginnings.

Lord Bhanudeva, who is the son of Lord Sun, Shani Dev goes to meet the Sun God. This is one reason why the day is considered auspicious. Also, it is believed that Lord Shani Dev is the Lord Of Capricorn.
The festival is celebrated in different ways, with different names in every corner of the year. In Tamil Nadu, people celebrate it as Pongal. In Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, it is celebrated as Sankranti.
