Be it Makar Sakranti in the North or Pongal in Southern India, Puran Poli is one yummy and healthy but heavy dessert or dish that is loved by all and is prepared in many households, If you too want to make it this time, here is an easy recipe that will make your day! Made of gur or jaggery and chana dal and wheat, this is a super healthy dish which is called Puran poli in Gujarati and Marathi,  Holige or Obbattu in Kannada, Baksham or Bobbattu or Oliga in Telugu, Uppittu in Malayalam and Tamil, Polae in Telangana or Poli in Konkani. The chana in this recipe is a major source of fiber, protein and it may help reduce cholesterol. The Jaggery is a pool of carbohydrates and the wheat has complex carbohydrates.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked chana dal
  • 1 cup grated jaggery
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ghee for frying
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder

Step

  1. Step 1:

    Mix flour,salt and ghee in a bowl and then add in a little water to make a soft dough.

  2. Step 2:

    Let is set for 30 minutes.

  3. Step 3:

    Meanwhile, mix jaggery, cooked dal, and ghee in a pan and cook until the jaggery melts.

  4. Step 4:

    Cook the mixture on low heat till the time it starts leaving the sides of the pan and thickens.

  5. Step 5:

    Add nutmeg powder, cardamom powder and mix well.

  6. Step 6:

    Now let the filling cool down.

  7. Step 7:

    Divide the filling and dough into 6 parts.

  8. Step 8:

    Roll and dust the dough balls and make a 4-5 inch circle.

  9. Step 9:

    Fill in the ball in the middle and then close in the sides and roll it again into 6 inch balls and do this for all.

  10. Step 10:

    Heat a griddle and transfer the Puran Poli on it.

  11. Step 11:

    Cook from both the sides until brown spots appear.

  12. Step 12:

    Apply ghee on both the sides and press the Puran Poli using back of a ladle.

  13. Step 13:

    Fry until golden brown from both the sides.

  14. Step 14:

    Serve hot.
