India has a rich history of contributions and sacrifices by women during the freedom struggle.
Their contributions and sacrifices should never be forgotten, and it is essential that we continue to recognize their contributions to India's history. These five women revolutionaries were just a few of the many Indian women who contributed to the country's freedom struggle and social justice movements.
Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay
Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was a prominent Indian freedom fighter and social reformer who dedicated her life to the empowerment of women. She was the first woman to run for a legislative seat in India in 1926 and went on to become the first Indian woman to be arrested by the British for her participation in the Salt Satyagraha movement. Kamaladevi was also a skilled writer and a passionate advocate of Indian handicrafts, promoting the industry through the All India Handicrafts Board.
Tarakeshwari Sinha
Tarakeshwari Sinha was a fearless revolutionary who played a vital role in the Quit India Movement. She was known for her dedication to the cause of Indian independence and her determination to fight against British imperialism. Tarakeshwari was arrested multiple times for her activism, but she continued to work towards her goal of a free India until her death in 1973.
Durga Bai
Durga Bai was a tribal woman from Madhya Pradesh who fought against the British during the Indian freedom struggle. She was a member of the Gond tribe and played a crucial role in organizing tribal people to fight against British imperialism. Durga Bai's bravery and determination made her a symbol of resistance for the tribal people of Madhya Pradesh. Soha Ali Khan plays her role in the 2006 popular Bollywood film Rang De Basanti.
Usha Mehta
Usha Mehta was a prominent Indian freedom fighter who played a key role in organizing the underground radio broadcast during the Quit India Movement. She was known as "the voice of the revolution" and used her radio broadcasts to spread the message of independence and inspire the people of India to rise up against British rule.

Kalpana Dutt
Kalpana Dutt was a revolutionary and a member of the Indian Communist Party. She is best known for her participation in the Chittagong Armoury Raid in 1930, where a group of revolutionaries led by Master Da Surya Sen raided the British armory and captured it for a few days before being overpowered by British forces. Kalpana Dutt was one of the few members of the group who managed to escape and went on to continue her revolutionary activities until her death in 1995. Deepika Padukone plays her role in the 2010 Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.
