KGF, Kantara Rising Trend Of Kannada Films Reigning Box Offices

K.G.F. Chapter 1, the 2018 Kannada period action film directed by Prashanth Neel starring Yash, became the highest grossing Kannada film and turned out to be a cult hit. The film gave rise to a second installment titled K.G.F. Chapter 1 which also became one of the highest grossing films of 2022.

Now, the latest release Kantara is making headlines almost every day by breaking box office records and the netizens going gaga over the film. With the film’s rising popularity, we have curated a list of films that are making way for Kannada films to make it huge globally.

KGF Chapter 1

Produced under the banner of Hombale films, K.G.F. Chapter 1 features Yash as Rocky, born in poverty who is a high-ranking assassin in Mumbaicwhile debutant Ramachandra Raju as Garuda. The film focuses on Rocky after he is offered total control of Mumbai by his employer's boss. Following which, Rocky disguises himself as a slave-laborer in the Narachi limestone mine (Kolar Gold Fields), aiming to assassinate Garuda who is the future heir of Kolar Gold Fields. The film with an estimated budget of ₹80 crores, earned over ₹250 crores.

KGF Chapter 2

The second instalment of the film, K. G. F. Chapter 2, released this year starring Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Srinidhi Shetty and Prakash Raj. After Rocky establishes himself as the kingpin of the Kolar Gold Fields, the film follows his journey as he retains his supremacy over adversaries and government officials, while also coming to terms with his past. With a budget of ₹100 crores, K. G. F. Chapter 2 is reportedly the most expensive Kannada film ever made and it earned an estimated ₹1200-1250 crores at the box office.

Vikrant Rona

Another Kannada film that crossed ₹200 crores is the Sudeepa and Jacqueline Fernandez starrer action-adventure thriller film Vikrant Rona. The film follows Inspector Vikrant Rona, who arrives at a remote village in the middle of a tropical rainforest. As the film proceeds, he starts witnessing a series of unexplainable supernatural events that take place there. The film collected ₹150-210 crores and became the third highest grossing Kannada film.

Kantara

Directed by Rishab Shetty and another Hombale Films production, the action thriller film Kantarastars Shetty himself as a Kambala champion, who disagrees with an honest DRFO officer, Murali (played by Kishore). The film has already crossed ₹100 crores and has become one of the highest grossing Kannada films. The film has also crossed films like RRR and K. G. F. Chapter 2 in becoming the highest rated IMDb film.
