Winters are around the corner, which means our refrigerators will soon be stocked with nutrient-rich green leafy vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, spinach, and more. However, like every year, you’ll be faced with the universal question of ‘how to keep your greens fresh for long?’ Whenever we do grocery shopping, we buy a week's worth of veggies to avoid frequent market trips. But days later, we find all the greens rotting and wilting in the fridge which results in nothing but food wastage. To resolve this problem, we bring you some effective hacks to keep your green veggies fresh for as long as possible.

Easy Steps To Keep Your Greens Fresh In Refrigerator For Long

Here’s how you can keep your green leafy vegetables fresh in the refrigerator for a long time no matter the season:

Wash Green Vegetables Properly

If you are buying loose leafy vegetables, then make sure you wash them properly. Take a bowl filled with cold water, fill the vegetables in it, and clean them properly. Dry the green leaves using a paper towel. Make sure the leaves are properly dried before storing them. Excess water in green vegetables can shorten their shelf life.

If you’ve been storing leafy greens stuffed with other veggies and fruits in the fridge then it’s time to change that. Green veggies are sensitive to certain fruits that release ethylene gas (known as the ripening hormone). Also, suffocating them with other vegetables will only speed up the process of rotting. If you have less space in the fridge, then wrap the leaves in a paper towel and then store them. You can also keep the paper towel-wrapped leaves in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. This will help manage the space and keep moisture at bay.
