Gardeners, it is mogra season again! Mogra or jasmine flowers bloom during the summer months between April and June. Fragrant jasmine is one of the most loved flowers in India, no wonder it is used everywhere, right from our decorations to perfumes to religious ceremonies. With the blossom season around the corner, this is just the perfect time to try some natural flowering remedies to grow your mogra plant quickly.

We spoke to Kamlesh Kushwaha, a seasoned gardener working for a nursery in Noida sector 27 and he shared some tried and tested tips to grow mogra plants quickly this season.

Check For Spider Mites

The gardening expert shared that white spots on the petals of the mogra flower often go unnoticed but these are spider mites attacking the plant. These mites don't let the mogra plant grow. Over time, if the growth of these mites isn't controlled, they make the plant turn yellow. If this happens, no fertiliser can help save the plant, no matter how effective. Check if your plant has any white spots, if you find any, use a fungicide and follow with a pesticide. Neem oil can be applied to the petals and leaves to keep spider mites at bay. Make sure you always dilute pesticides and fungicides in water before applying to the plant. If applied directly, these can even kill the plant.

Don't Forget To Prune

Pruning includes trimming and cutting the dead, diseased, or damaged parts of the plant. Pruning helps in controlling the size of the plant and also stimulates growth and flowering. Not pruning a mogra plant only prevents its overall growth. Without pruning, you will hardly get any flowers on the plant. When pruning a mogra plant, make sure you cut just above the nodes where you spot more than three leaves emerging at once. This helps in creating new branches and further increases the production of flowers. If your plant is not flowering at all, be consistent with pruning, suggested the gardening expert.

Try DIY Pesticide For Plants

You can prepare a pesticide at home for your plants if you don't wish to buy one from the market. All you need to do is mix water with sanitiser (40-60 ratio), transfer it to a spray bottle, and use it on your plants every few days, three to four times.

Fertilise Mogra Plant Every Two Months

Irrespective of the season, you should fertilise your mogra plant once every two months. Before fertilising the plant, make sure you dig up the roots a bit and let them sun dry for two to three days. This will prevent fungus growth in the roots. For a mogra plant, you need a plant rich in zinc, calcium, and phosphorus. While these pesticides can be purchased separately, you can also make a mix at home. In a bottle, mix iron powder, calcium powder, leaf compost, neem powder, and cow dung manure. Apply a layer of fertiliser on the soil. Follow with watering the plant. (Tips to grow plants quickly)

Avoid Using Mustard Cake Fertiliser

While mustard cake fertiliser is widely used in gardening, our expert recommended not using it for mogra plants, especially during the flowering period or it can hinder flower production. Instead, the expert suggested using this fertiliser during the time the plant isn't actively growing since it offers all nutrients to the plant's roots and doesn't interfere with flowering during this time.
