We all know that Holi is all about vibrant colours, celebration, laughter, and love, and it should be a skin-friendly celebration. This Holi, keep your family and yourself away from the heavy synthetic colours, dyes, metals, and toxic chemicals that leave skin dry and itchy, with clogged pores.

Making organic Holi colours at home is surprisingly easy, cost-effective and eco-friendly using minimal kitchen products.

Based on the recipes that I have personally tested, here is a list of key natural ingredients available in most Indian kitchens to make your Holi both safe and happy:

How to Make Organic Holi Colours at Home

Turmeric (Yellow)

The staple culinary spice, Turmeric or Haldi, is known for its antiseptic properties. A gold standard for organic Holi, mix two parts of Turmeric powder with one part of Besan or Rice flour as a dry mix.

Note: The flour will lighten the yellow pigmentation and act as a natural scrub.

Beetroot (Deep Magenta)

A preferred choice for women for natural lip and cheek tint, beetroot can also be used as a Holi colour. Grate a beetroot and sun-dry it. Grind the dried beetroot into a fine powder. You can mix cornflour to increase the volume.

To make wet colour using beetroot, soak the fresh, grated beetroot in water overnight or boil it to fill your 'pichkari'.

Hibiscus Flowers (Red)

Often known as the 'Botox plant', Hibiscus has significant skin benefits, offering radiance, hydration, and soothing inflammation. Sun-dry the hibiscus petals and grind them into a fine powder. Add a small amount of sandalwood powder to increase the volume. You can also soak the petals overnight, which releases the natural red pigmentation.

3

Palash Flowers (Bright Orange)

Widely popular in the North-Eastern India, Palash flowers (Flame of the Forest) are a great choice for Holi colours. Offering significant skin benefits with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, these flowers can be used to make scented orange water colour. Soak the dried Palash flowers overnight or boil until the water reaches a deep, reddish orange colour.

Natural Holi Colour: Pro Tip

To increase the volume of any desired ‘dry’ Holi colour, mix rice flour or cornstarch.

  • Rice Flour will act as a natural scrub, offering a grainy texture to your skin.
  • Cornstarch will offer a traditional ‘Gulal’ feel, giving your skin a silky texture.
