Harmanpreet Kaur Breaks Dhoni’s Captaincy Record Of T20I Wins

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team led by Harmanpreet Kaur has made it to the semi-finals in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

With the Indian Women’s Cricket team’s big win against Pakistan in the Commonwealth Games 2022, captain Harmanpreet Kaur has surpassed former captain MS Dhoni’s captaincy record. While Dhoni had set a record with 41 T20 International wins, Kaur has broken the record with 42 wins!

Since the beginning of the Commonwealth Games, people have become more curious about the women’s cricket team in general. Vice Captain Smriti Mandhana and Captain Kaur have especially made a mark with their tremendous performances. Here’s why one should know more about who is leading the country’s Women’s Cricket team and setting new records every time she is on the pitch.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s DebutKaur

Born in Punjab, the 33-year-old cricketer is a Post Graduate in English. She initially worked as an assistant professor. During the formative days of her career, she mostly played with men. She made her ODI (One Day International) debut at the age of 20 against the Pakistan Women’s team in the 2009 Women's Cricket World Cup. In the same year, Kaur made her T20 International debut in the 2009 ICC Women’s World Twenty20.

Kaur first became the captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team for the 2012 Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup final since both captain Mithali Raj and vice-captain Jhulan Goswami were injured. The following year, in 2013, she was made the ODI captain of the Indian women's team. Making India's highest ever chase in T20 internationals, in January 2016, Kaur helped India win a series in Australia as well as scored 46 runs in 31 balls. In the same year, she also became the first Indian cricketer to be signed by an overseas Twenty20 franchise. The Women's Big Bash League champions, Sydney Thunder, had signed her for the 2016–17 season.

Kaur also holds the record of the highest individual score for India in Women's cricket World Cup history by scoring 171 in the knockout stage, surpassing the previous record of 107 by former Australian cricketer, Karen Rolton.

In 2018, when she played as the captain of the team for the ICC Women's World Twenty20, she became the first woman for India to score a century in WT20Is. She made 103 runs from 51 balls in the opening match of the tournament against New Zealand. Following her scores in the World T20 and the Sydney Thunder's squad the same year, she was made the captain for the 2020 ICC World Twenty20 again. In 2022, Kaur was again listed for the 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.

Currently, Kaur is leading the Indian Women’s Cricket Team in the Commonwealth Games 2022 that are taking place in Birmingham. It is the first time that women’s cricket has been introduced into the Game.
