Govardhan Puja has a special significance in Hinduism. Also known as Annakoot, this day is celebrated on the first day of Shukla Paksha, i.e., Pratipada in the month of Kartik and usually, it is celebrated the day after Diwali.

This festival is celebrated in different ways throughout the country but it is celebrated with great enthusiasm in North India, especially in the areas of Vraj Bhoomi including Mathura, Vrindavan, Nandgaon, Gokul, and Barsana.

The festival is associated with Lord Krishna. Once Lord Krishna saved all the villagers from the terror of Indra by lifting the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger, thus inspiring everyone to worship Govardhan Parvat. Since that day the festival is celebrated and it has become a tradition to worship Govardhan Parvat with cow dung. Usually, Govardhan Puja falls on Pratipada tithi, the day after Diwali. However, this year, due to the shadow of the solar eclipse on this date, it will be celebrated on October 26, 2022.

  • Govardhan Puja Date - October 26, 2022, Wednesday
  • Pratipada date starts - October 25, Tuesday, from 04:18 pm
  • Pratipada date closing - October 26, Wednesday, till 02:42 pm
  • Auspicious time for worship - 26 October from 06:29 to 08:43

  • On this day, make a picture of Govardhan mountain with cow dung and decorate it with yellow flowers.
  • Offer 56 dishes as prasad near this Govardhan mountain.
  • Light incense, lamps and worship by offering fruits and other offerings. There is a tradition to offer 6 types of vegetables on this day.
  • Place a lamp on the Govardhan mountain prepared from cow dung and worship. Lord Vishwakarma, the god of skilled craftsmen, is also worshipped on this day.
  • For worship, circumambulate Govardhan prepared from cow dung and recite the story of Govardhan.
  • In the evening, collect this cow dung figure and keep it at the main entrance of the house after lighting it on fire.

Govardhan is an important festival in Hinduism. It is believed that the person who performs this puja directly harmonises with nature. It is believed that by worshipping the mountain made of cow dung and Lord Krishna, all your wishes will be fulfilled.
