If we look at Election Commission figures, then there are 1.5 crore youth who are going to cast their votes for the first time in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. This information was revealed as part of a survey called 'Power of 18'conducted by social media platform Twitter. The youth is not just a demographic for politicians anymore. The power of this section of society can be seen on social media where matters related to the nation are openly discussed these days with much awareness among them. Needless to say, the youth today is just waiting to make its voice heard and their impact on election results will be felt this time. Her Zindagi talked to a few of the first-time voters to know what are the issues that concern them and what will make them decide on a candidate while exercising their right to vote. One of them was young intern Ahana Jacob and here’s what she said.
How Important Is The Right To Vote For You?
The right to vote is very important for me as it empowers you with a choice to elect your leader - which is the foundation of a democracy.
On What Basis Will You Decide To Vote For A Candidate?
The candidate that I opt for will be chosen according to the party’s principles, the one which I identify with, especially the one which does not believe in ‘divide and rule’ as a part of its agenda.
What Are The Issues That Concern You? What Changes Would You Like To See In Your Area And In The Country?
The primary issues that concern me include inequality, the safety of women, intolerance, dividing the country on the basis of religion or caste and lynching. I would like Delhi to be safer for women, and stricter traffic rules to be implemented along with steps for improvement in air quality.

What Do You Think Of The Role Of Youth In Politics Today?
Youth should definitely enter politics. There is a dearth of young people in the political parties of our country, and it is probably why we do not see anything new. If young people are involved in politics then we can get a chance to see new ideas and changes. Also, there will be fewer cases of corruption in the country.
What’s Your Message For The People Who Are Saying They Don’t Want To Vote?
Not wanting to vote is a choice as well, and one cannot be compelled to do so. Nevertheless, everyone (who can cast a vote) should be encouraged to do so as that is the power we get, of being citizens of a democratic country.
