Earthquake Strikes Myanmar and Thailand

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread destruction and chaos in Myanmar, Thailand, and other Southeast Asian regions. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in central Myanmar, approximately 50 kilometers east of the city of Monywa. The quake was followed by a powerful aftershock with a magnitude of 6.4, just 12 minutes later, as per reports.

An X user ‘vetrivel1996’ wrote, “The current status of the world-famous Mahamuni Buddha Temple in Mandalay… It is believed that direct disciples of Buddha came to this temple in the fifth century BC. Details of the damage in Myanmar are slowly starting to emerge.”

The earthquake resulted in widespread destruction as several high-rise buildings and hundreds of homes collapsed in Myanmar while a 30-storey under-construction skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok, trapping 43 people and killing two labourers, according to the reports. The National Center for Seismology reported that the earthquake hit at a depth of 10 km, causing violent tremors that were felt in the neighbouring countries, including China, India, and Laos.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a state of emergency in Bangkok and six other regions, following the tragedy. She also announced an emergency meeting to assess the impact of the quake. The Embassy of India in Bangkok issued an emergency number for Indian nationals in Thailand, and the Indian government expressed its readiness to provide assistance to the affected countries.
