Dussehra 2023: Date, Time, Shubha Muhurat And Rituals Of Ravana Dahan

On October 23, 2023, we will celebrate Dussehra, the day Lord Ram killed Ravana, the demon king of Lanka (present-day Sri Lanka). It symbolises the victory of good over evil and is celebrated across India with huge fervour and enthusiasm.

Ramleela processions are carried out in various cities, large statues of Ravana, his son Meghnad, and brother Kumbhakaran are erected in open grounds. Kids or adults playing Lord Ram in Ramleela are often tasked with shooting an arrow at the statues, and they burn into flames.

We connected with astrologer Pandit Arvind Tripathi to understand the auspicious time and rituals of Ravana Dahan.

Dussehra 2023 Date And Time

The auspicious time to celebrate Dussehra will begin on October 23, 2023, at 05.44 pm. It will continue till October 24, 2024, at 03.14 pm. Hence, people will celebrate Dussehra for two days.

Dussehra 2023 Shubh Muhurat

On Dussehra, people often organise veneration for ammunition and tools. The shubh muhurat for this puja is on October 24, 2023, at 01.58 pm. It will remain auspicious till 02.43 pm.

Ravana Dahan Or Dussehra Dahan Shubh Muhurat

The auspicious time to burn statues of Ravana is on October 24, 2023, at 5.43 pm. The shubh muhurat is counted 2.5 hours from sunset. However, Dussehra or Ravana dahan will take place on the evening of October 23, 2023, in most of the places. Many offices have also counted it as a holiday.

Dussehra 2023 Shubha Yoga

According to the expert, there are two auspicious yog for Dussehra 20023. There are:

Ravi Yoga - This will begin at 6.27 am on October 24, 2023, and continue till 3.30 pm.

Second Ravi Yog - The second shubh yog will begin at 6.38 pm on October 24, 2023, and continue till 6.28 am on October 25, 2023.

Prosperity (Vridhi) Yog - This yog will begin at 3.40 pm and continue throughout the night of October 24, 2023.

Dussehra Puja Rituals

The astrologer said that on the day of Dussehra, one should take a bath early in the morning. This period is referred to as Brahma Muhurat. It starts one hour 26 minutes before the sunrise and continues 48 minutes after the sunrise. It is believed that any holy activity that happens around this time bears fruitful results for people who performed it or participated in it.

The expert also suggested making a statue of Ravana using lime or wheat grains. It will be followed by creating nine spheres and two bowls using cow dung. You should keep coins in one bowl and kumkum (roli or red powder), barley grains, rice grains, and fruits in another bowl.

You should offer barley, banana, radish, and jaggery to Ravana’s idol. If you worship ammunition, weapons, and tools on this day, you should add them as well to the offerings.

This ritual is followed by a donation of food or any other thing based on your financial condition. Following the Ravana Dahan, you should offer leaves of the Shami tree or jand plant to your elders, touch their feet, and seek their blessings.
