Char Dham Yatra

Char Dham Yatra

This yatra or pilgrimage is a journey to four holy sites located high in the Himalayas – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. In Hindi, 'char' means four and 'dham' means religious places.

The temples located at high altitudes are closed for about six months every year, opening in summer (April or May) and closing with the onset of winter (October or November). It is believed that the Char Dham Yatra should be completed in a clockwise direction. Therefore, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, moves towards Gangotri, goes to Kedarnath and finally ends at Badrinath. Some devotees also undertake Do Dham Yatra or pilgrimage to two shrines – Kedarnath and Badrinath.
