Asha Parekh To Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award For ‘Contribution To Indian Cinema’

Veteran Bollywood actor Asha Parekh will be awarded India's highest film honour – Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2020.

The news was announced by Union Minister for I&B Anurag Thakur. He shared the news via his Twitter handle.

Sharing the video, he wrote, "Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to recognise & award Smt Asha Parekh ji for her exemplary lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award shall be presented by the Hon President of India at 68th NFA in Vigyan Bhawan."

The award will be presented to Parekh during the 68th National Film Awards ceremony, which will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award committee, which comprises Asha Bhosle, Hema Malini, Poonam Dhillon, Udit Narayan, and TS Nagabharana decided on Asha Parekh's name for the award.

Asha Parekh started her acting journey at the age of ten with the film Maa in 1952. Her screen name was 'Baby Asha Parekh'.

She again appeared in a film at the age of 16, after completing school. Her debut film as a heroine was the film Dil Deke Dekho in 1959.

After that, she appeared in several commercially successful films throughout her career. Some of her remarkable films include Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1964), Ziddi (1964), Upkar (1967), Samadhi (1972), and Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1972), among others.

She also appeared in regional films including the Gujarati film Akhand Saubhagyavati in 1963, the Punjabi film Kankan De Ohle in 1971, and the Kannada movie Sharavegada Saradara in 1989.

She also formed her own production company called Akruti where she produced serials.

Parekh’s career in the film industry spans close to seven decades.

The actor has been given several awards over the years. Some of the remarkable honours include:

She was honoured with the Padma Shri award in 1992. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1972. She also won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.

She won the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award and IIFA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema in 2006.

In 2007, she won the Bollywood Movie Award – Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2014, she won the Stardust Lifetime Achievement Award.
