Amitabh Bachchan, fondly known as the Shehenshah of Bollywood, turns 80 years old today on October 11, 2022. The actor, host, occasional singer and poet is one of the most successful and prolific actors in India. He has added several national and international accolades to his name in a career spanning over five decades.
Born in Allahabad to poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and activist Teji Bachchan, the actor debuted in the Hindi film industry as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's National Award-winning film Bhuvan Shome in 1969. He has won four National Awards as Best Actor, and a Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement. Big B also has been honoured with the second, third, and fourth highest civilian awards in India – Padma Vibhushan (2015), Padma Bhushan (2001), Padma Shri (1984).
On the occasion of the iconic actor’s 80th birthday, we remember five memorable roles of Bachchan.
Silsila
Bachchan starred in the 1981 Hindi melodrama Silsila along with Rekha and his real-life wife Jaya Bachchan. The film revolves around a love triangle between romantic playwright Amit (played by Amitabh Bachchan),, his wife Shobha (played by Jaya Bachchan), and his former partner Chandni (played by Rekha). Silsila narrates the events of Amit and Shobha’s marriage of convenience, which causes a drift between them, followed by his encounter with Chandni that leads to an extramarital affair.

Sholay
Bachchan played the role of Jay in the classic 1975 action-adventure film Sholay. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film also starred Dharmendra as Veeru, Hema Malini as Basanti, and Jaya Bachchan (then Bhaduri), among others. The film was an overseas success in the Soviet Union and was the highest-grossing Indian film ever at the time. It is still considered a benchmark of Indian cinema.
Black
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the 2005 Hindi drama film Black stars Bachchan and Rani Mukerji in the lead. The film narrates the story of a deaf and blind woman (played by Mukerji) and her bond with her teacher (played by Bachchan), an elderly alcoholic who later develops Alzheimer's.
Agneepath
The 1990 Hindi action-crime drama film Agneepath stars Bachchan as Vijay, who sets out to avenge the death of his father and for all the injustices faced by his family. As a result he joins the Mumbai underworld. Inspired by the life of a Mumbai gangster Manya Surve, an infamous underworld don in Mumbai, the title of the film has been taken from a poem of the same name written by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, which is recited at the beginning of the film by Bachchan.

Pink
In 2016, Bachchan appeared in this women-centric courtroom drama Pink starring Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, and Andrea Tariang. Directed by Soojit Sircar, the film won the Best Film on Other Social Issues at the 64th National Film Awards. The film gave out a very important lesson on consent, the word ‘No’ and its meaning when a woman says it.
