The mythological love drama starring Samantha Prabhu and Dev Mohan has been making headlines ever since its announcement. Ahead of its release in India and the US, the makers hosted a special screening in Hyderabad and the reviews are all over social media.

Shaakuntalam, helmed by Gunasekhar is based on Abhijnanasakuntalam, a play written by Kalidasa which is believed to be a masterpiece in the world of literature. Though the exact date of the story is uncertain, it is believed that this play was written in the 4th century CE. The story revolves around Shakuntala, daughter of Sage Visvamitra and Apsara Menaka and king Dushyant who fall in love.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu recently took to her Instagram handle and shared five 'crazy' things about the movie.

  • Samantha had a flower allergy while shooting for the movie. She had to wear flower ornaments on her arms and neck. She would shoot all day and when she would take out the flower jewellery, it would leave an imprint on her arm. It was like a flower tattoo that stayed on for six months.
  • Prabhu dubbed for three languages - Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. She shared how she would often keep saying her dialogues even in her sleep.
  • Another 'crazy' thing was that she got bit by a rabbit on the sets of Shaakuntalam.
  • For a song sequence, she took around 15 takes because of her lehenga that weighed 30 kilos. While spinning for the song, her lehenga would take her out of the frame and it was quite challenging for her to shoot with it.
  • Shaakuntala's hair in the movie isn't real. Samantha Prabhu revealed that it isn't her real hair and she wore a wig for her character.

Shaakuntalam was previously slated to be release in November 2022. However, it was later pushed to February 2023. Further, the makers postponed the release and now it will finally make it to the theatres on Friday, April 14, 2023 in India. The movie will premiere in the US on April 13, 2023.
