The 70th National Film Awards were held on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Held at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, the recipients were felicitated by President Droupadi Murmu. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest accolade in cinema, went to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty. He took home the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medal, a shawl, and a cash prize of roughly Rs. 10 lakh.

The ceremony was to happen on May 3, 2023 but was postponed due to COVID-19-induced delays. Finally, the winners' names were announced in August and the ceremony took place on Tuesday. The 70th National Film Awards also threw up some interesting facts. Here are some of them:

AR Rahman: Music Director With Most National Awards

AR Rahman won a National Award for Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Tamil) in the category of Best Background Score at the 2024 ceremony. The genius music composer has bagged a stunning seven National Awards till now, the maximum won by any music director in India. His first win was for his debut film, Roja (Tamil) in 1992, followed by Minsara Kanavu (Tamil) in 1996, Lagaan (Hindi) in 2001, Kannathil Muthamittal (Tamil) in 2022, and Kaatru Veliyidai (Tamil) and Mom (Hindi) in 2017.

Manasi Parekh: First Gujarati Actress To Win Award

At the 70th National Film Awards, Manasi Parekh got the award for Best Actress in 2024 for Kutch Express. Her portrayal of Monghi in the film was lauded by critics, as well. Co-produced by her, alongside Parthiv Gohil, the 2023 release also starred Ratna Pathak Shah, Dharmendra Gohil, and Darsheel Safary. Parekh's win makes her the first Gujarati actress to receive this honour.

Ponniyin Selvan: I Wins Most Awards

Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: I won the maximum trophies at the 70th National Film Awards. The epic action drama film grabbed four awards under the categories of Best Tamil Film, Best Cinematography (Ravi Varman), Best Music Direction (Background Score) that went to Rahman, and Best Sound Design (Anand Krishnamoorthi). Interestingly, this is Ratnam's first National Award win after a decade. He last won it for Kannathil Muthamittal.

Fourth National Award for Manoj Bajpayee

Manoj Bajpayee received a National Award under the "Special Mention" category for his poignant portrayal of Arun Batra in Gulmohar this year. This is his 4th win at the prestigious award ceremony. His earlier wins were for Bhonsle in 2021 in "Best Actor" category, Pinjar in 2004 under "Special Jury Award (Feature Film)" category, and Satya in 1999 under "Best Supporting Actor" category.

Sooraj Barjatya's Only National Award

Sooraj Barjatya won big at the 70th National Film Awards as he got the Best Direction trophy for Uunchai (2022). The multi-starrer is his seventh directorial, but he was bereft of a National Award till now. His comeback film sure proved lucky for him.
