Festivals hold a significant place in our cultural tapestry, and they often take centre stage in our beloved bollywood films. With Diwali just around the corner in two months, our anticipation is already building. To set the mood for the upcoming festival of lights, we've taken a nostalgic journey through some of our cherished diwali moments in bollywood movies. These iconic scenes transport us to beautifully adorned sets, vibrant rangolis, and mouthwatering feasts, all while captivating stories unfold in the foreground. These cinematic moments have etched the spirit of diwali into our memories, making them unforgettable.
1. ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’
The essence of Diwali (sweet dish for Diwali) lies in the heartwarming act of coming back home. ‘Kabhie Khushi Khabhi Gham’ beautifully captures this sentiment of returning home during Diwali vacation to relish laddoos and embrace the warmth of family, reminiscent of the Raichand family's extravagant celebrations. In their opulent grandeur, the Raichands perform Diwali pooja, with Nandini, the family matriarch, sensing something amiss, only to be pleasantly surprised by her son's arrival. While our own festivities may not match the grandeur of the Raichands, the feeling of reuniting with loved ones during Diwali resonates with many of us living away from home.
2. ‘Mohabbatein’
When you enroll in a movie featuring the trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and the ghostly presence of Aishwarya Rai, you can anticipate a whirlwind of drama. The year 2000 witnessed the release of this iconic film. Its Diwali sequence remains etched in memory for its sensational drama and pandemonium. The climax unfolds during an unofficial Diwali event (unapproved by the stern principal), where the crowd immerses themselves in dance and song, symbolising breaking free from constraints, and curiously, engaging in theft. This is also the moment when defiance rises against the aforementioned strict principal, as everyone boldly continues dancing with their respective partners, challenging the school's rule against co-hosting with the opposite sex.
3. ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’
This lavish film serves as a poignant nostalgic journey to the more uncomplicated era of the 80s and the world of family-oriented dramas. You simply can't resist the catchy tune of 'Dikhtana.’ This song makes its appearance in the movie during the Diwali festivities, serving as the moment when the audience learns about Renuka Shahane's character's pregnancy.
4. ‘Golmaal 3’
In the hilarious movie ‘Golmaal 3,’ a memorable and comical scene unfolds, featuring the ensemble cast comprising Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, and the legendary Johnny Lever. This particular scene takes place on the occasion of Diwali, where they set up a stall to sell crackers. However, true to the film's comedic nature, things take a riotous turn as they inadvertently end up setting off and bursting all of the crackers in a series of uproarious mishaps. The combination of impeccable timing and the cast's comedic prowess makes this scene a standout moment.

This musical sequence is a spirited dance performance, led by the energetic Govinda, and it's bound to inspire you to groove along. The song ‘Aayi Hai Diwali’ beautifully portrays the entire neighbourhood coming together on a well-lit street adorned with diyas, encapsulating the essence of the festival in a visually captivating and celebratory manner.
