Why Did Rajkumar Hirani Make ‘Dunki’?

Sharing an image of a house with a roof featuring a cement aeroplane water tank installed, SRK asked Hirani the story behind the house. Hirani said that the image was of a house somewhere near Jalandhar, and many such houses in the vicinity had similar water tanks. As a part of the research, he came to know that people opt for such water tanks as a sign of pride after one of their family members goes abroad to earn or settle.
He spoke about how people in Punjab started going abroad in the 1950s to earn money, but an act was passed in the 1960s that made it difficult for aspirants to get visas to settle abroad. Therefore, they opted for an illegal route to cross borders and reach their destination. This route came to be known as the Donkey Route. Hirani’s ‘Dunki’ is based on the struggles of Indians who want to work abroad but cannot get visas.
Hirani shared that to research more about the film, he even attended English classes at a local organisation claiming that they could help people pass the IELTS exam.
Behind-The-Scenes Stories Of ‘Dunki’

However, she was asked to learn wrestling as a part of preparing for the movie. Khan also shared a BTS image of Pannu taking pride after showing off her wrestling skills on the actor.

Towards the end of ‘Dunki Diaries’, Khan expressed his wish to be cast ‘in and as’ in one of Hirani’s films, however, it could not have been possible, so Hirani gifted him ‘Banda’, a song describing Khan’s character, Hardy, in the film.
Khan's caption on IG read, "Tum jo maang loge dil toh yeh jaan dega banda….vaadon ka iraadon ka aur apne yaaron ka yaar. Aur ek aur yaar @diljitdosanjh paaji ne is gaane mein jaan bhar di hai. Thank u and love u paaji for making Hardy a banda for everyone to love."
