During the lethal coronavirus wave in 2020, Netflix released the folklore horror ‘Bulbbul’. Starring Triptii Dimri, Avinash Tiwary, Paoli Dam, and Rahul Bose, the Anushka Sharma production and Anvita Dutt Guptan directorial has been crafted soulfully with realistic sets and vintage costumes representing the British-ruled Bengal Presidency in the 1800s.
Bulbbul Plot
The child bride Bulbbul is a titular character married to a much older man, Indranil, with a differently-abled twin, Mahendra, and a much younger brother Satya, who becomes Bulbbul’s shoulder. Their growing closeness burns Mahendra’s heart with envy when he sends Satya to London to study while creating a threatening environment for Bulbbul.
Bulbbul’s Beauty
On the surface, ‘Bulbbul’ may appear to be a regular dramatic folklore. However, its many layers of good, evil, and justice are what make it worth a watch.
Horror Of Reality
While many believe that ‘Bulbbul’ is a horror movie due to its mystical character chudail (night hag), some may argue that the real element of horror is the portrayal of reality. The showcasing of domestic abuse, rape, and oppression is what runs shivers down your spine.

Shakchunni Or Maa Kaali
In Bengali folklore, Shakchunni (night hags) are spirits of women mistreated when alive and now haunt villagers. ‘Bulbbul’ escalates after the shakchunni’s birth, who drinks the blood of evil men who assault women and girls. But so did Maa Kaali when she slaughtered the devil Raktabeej. Guptan’s intelligent writing shows conflicting and subjective perceptions of good and evil.
Inspired By Bengali Literature
‘Bulbbul’ has been fabulously fabricated from fragments of famous Bengali novels like Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Devdas’ and Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Chokher Bali’ and ‘Charulata’. From the childhood friends growing together angle to the character dynamics, the movie is an ode to the profound Bengali literature.
Child Bride And Prejudice
Bulbbul’s adversities as a child bride were portrayed with utmost transparency. From experiencing intimacy through her brother-in-law Satya to being assaulted by her husband and his twin, Guptan has highlighted a child bride's evolving interests and vulnerability.
Impeccable Performances
Triptii Dimri shined as Bulbbul winning millions of hearts with her transformation from childlike to fierce while Avinash Tiwary’s small yet memorable role proved his acting prowess. Paoli Dam delved into her character like water and Rahul Bose nailed his contradicting characters with comparable honesty.
